Even the crumbs are beautiful…
Are you satisfied with what you have in your life? Is there anything that you wonder “if I only had thus-and-such” I would really be happy?
I’ll go first and say absolutely- yes.
… a truck without rust and dents… the ability to pay for my children’s college education…a dog without a growing number of tumors…repaired relationships… no need for therapy or medications…
Thankfully, these are only “I wonders” and I am not consumed or tormented that I am in the position I am in…
…. my truck runs and takes me where I need to go and haul what I need to haul. My children are paving the way for their own future very well. I have been working on repairing relationships. I am thankful for the help I am getting… I am grateful for all that my dog and I have shared (but it sucks that he is getting old and lumpy)
I am satiated.
I was given that word from The Holy Spirit almost audibly when I first began my healing journey. I knew it was from God because I didn’t really know what it meant and had to look it up, and my therapist kind of did a little head-back-eyebrows-up-mmmmm-thing.
“Satiated means being completely satisfied, especially after eating or fulfilling a desire, to the point where one could not consume more.
This term can also apply to emotional or intellectual fulfillment.”
Cambridge Dictionary
My parents were on opposite ends of this spectrum. My dad was happy sitting in his chair after work eating peanut butter and jelly on Ritz crackers. My mom was not. When they sailed our little “floating bathtub” my dad would dangle his feet over the side of the boat and enjoy being on the water. My mom was not happy unless the sail was full and the boat was on edge almost tipping over.
It took me a long time and lots of work, but I have finally figured out how destructive desiring and wanting are. It makes you myopic and blind to all that is around you….
you miss the warmth of sun-baked dog fur, the curve of your child’s smile, the presence of your spouse sleeping next to you, the laughter from your neighbor’s child…
How is it that I can be satiated with little pieces of broken glass I find on the beach, while others need a super yacht?
I can’t say for them, but I can say for me that it just is a gift from God. Set your heart on things above.
Then the woman came back to Jesus,
dropped to her knees, and begged.
“Master, help me.”
He said, “It’s not right to take bread out of children’s mouths
and throw it to dogs.”
She was quick:
“You’re right, Master,
but beggar dogs do get scraps
from the master’s table.”
Jesus gave in.
“Oh, woman, your faith is something else.
What you want is what you get!”
Right then her daughter became well.
Matthew 15:25-28
