stay low boys…

“stay low boys….”

This is one of my favorite closing lines of any film…

Standing proud and tall in football is simply begging to get hit. The only time you see it happen is during an end zone celebration, or when a ball carrier looks over their shoulder a few feet from the end zone and points back at the defensemen they just burned…. they skip and long-stide for the cameras… publicly humiliating them.

Stay low….

You are less likely to get hit. You are a smaller target. Your center of gravity helps you stay upright. You are being chased by a crowd that has a single thought; unleash slightly controlled violence on you in the greatest impact they can detonate.

Proud and tall… taken down…

God is always reminding and warning his people to stay low and humble. The world does not honor this… dog-eat-dog…to the victor belong the spoils…might means right… They say stand pround and tall.

…but the victor in this life will loose his life in the next, their flesh will be left for the dogs and the birds of the air…

“And I saw an angel standing in the sun,

who cried in a loud voice to all the birdsflying in midair,

“Come, gather together for the great supper of God,

so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty,

of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,

free and slave, great and small.”

Revelation 19:17-19

Listen to the prayer of a prophetess who was post-menopausal, living in shame in a culture that saw barrens as a curs. Even though she was useless in the eyes of the world she continued to praise God and bless him, and God honored her life of staying low by exulting her with a son. She gives us a warning to stay low and slow, and a promise that in doing we will join the heavenly victory dance with all the saints… think of it as a half-time show… and she has seen the end of the game.

“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.

She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.”

1 Samuel 2:4-5

The proud and lawless are being exalted and lifted up, are they not?

“stay low boys”… we don’t know when the last hit will come and the horn will sound
